Privacy policy

Effective: 5 November 2026

Who is responsible

Guidevox is run by Máté Gozner, a private individual living in Romania, who is the data controller for the data described as ours below. Contact: gozner.mate@yahoo.com. No data protection officer has been appointed because none is required at this scale.

The short version

Guidevox has no accounts, no ads and no servers of its own. We run no analytics in the app or on this website and use no cookies. Your voice is processed on your phone and is never uploaded. We don't receive what you say or type.

Voice

When a guide turns on the microphone, the phone's built-in on-device speech recogniser turns audio into text. The app only uses recognisers that work on the device, and on phones without one the guide can type instead. We don't store audio.

What travels between phones

The recognised text, typed messages and questions, display names and chosen languages travel directly between the phones in a room, over the same Wi-Fi network or hotspot. They stay in the app's memory for the tour, and are gone when you leave the room. Anyone can share a transcript using the phone's own sharing option; that copy is then theirs.

This link is not encrypted. The PIN controls who can join, but someone with technical tools on the same network could read the text. Don't say anything private or sensitive during a tour.

What stays on your phone

Your name, language and settings are stored only on your device until you delete the app. Camera images used to scan a join code are read on the phone and not saved.

What Google and Apple receive

Language models are downloaded from Google or Apple, who see that request like any download, including your IP address.

When a phone is online, Google's ML Kit translation library sends Google usage statistics: device and app information, performance metrics and the languages used. Google says the text being translated is not sent. This data is handled by Google and may be processed outside the EEA. Our legal basis for using this library is legitimate interest (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)): providing translation that works offline at no cost. See Google's ML Kit data disclosure. To prevent it, keep the phone offline during use.

Apple and Google also run the app stores and give us combined download and crash statistics, which don't identify you. Their own privacy policies apply to your store accounts.

Permissions

Microphone and speech recognition: the guide's speech. Camera: scanning a join code. Local network and nearby devices: connecting phones. Bluetooth: using a Bluetooth microphone or headset. Notifications: showing that a tour is running. On Android 12 and older, the system requires location permission to start a hotspot or find Wi-Fi details; we never read or store your location.

This website

This site is hosted by Netlify, whose servers process visitors' IP addresses and technical request details to deliver and protect the site. Our legal basis is legitimate interest. The site sets no cookies, has no analytics and loads nothing from other companies.

If you email us

We use your address and message to answer you, based on legitimate interest, and delete them within 24 months of the last contact unless the law requires otherwise. The email is handled by our email provider.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you can ask for access, correction, deletion, restriction or a portable copy of your personal data, object to processing based on legitimate interest, and withdraw consent. Because we don't hold your in-app data, most requests can be met by deleting the app. For anything we do hold, email us and we'll reply within one month. For data handled by Google or Apple, contact them directly.

You can complain to the Romanian supervisory authority, ANSPDCP, or the authority where you live.

Groups and professional guides

A guide using Guidevox for work may have their own duties towards their group. They should tell the group that speech is machine translated and that the link is unencrypted.

Children

Guidevox isn't aimed at children under 16. A child joining a group doesn't need an account, and the display name is optional.

Selling data and automated decisions

We don't sell or share personal data for advertising. We make no decisions with legal effects about you by automated means. Translations and voices are machine generated.

Changes

If the app starts handling data differently, we'll update this page first and change the date above. We'll tell you in the app if a change matters.
